Orange and Cardamom Scones

Introduction

Scones are a favorite for breakfast or an afternoon snack. They are easy to make, and you can customize them by adding different flavors. One of my favorite scone recipes is orange and cardamom scones. These scones are perfect for any occasion and are sure to please your taste buds.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons orange zest
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar, for glaze

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and ground cardamom. Mix well.
  3. Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry blender or your fingertips, cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg, buttermilk, vanilla extract, orange zest, and orange juice.
  5. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead it gently until it comes together. Shape the dough into a round disk that is about 1-inch thick.
  7. Using a sharp knife or a biscuit cutter, cut the disk into 8 equal wedges.
  8. Place the wedges on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 15-18 minutes or until they are lightly golden brown on the edges.
  9. Remove the scones from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes.
  10. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and 1-2 tablespoons of orange juice until you have a smooth, pourable glaze.
  11. Drizzle the glaze over the warm scones and serve immediately.

Variations

  • You can substitute the orange zest and juice for other citrus flavors like lemon or lime.
  • You can add dried fruit or nuts to the scone dough for added texture and flavor.
  • You can substitute the all-purpose flour for other flours like whole wheat or oat flour for a healthier option.

Conclusion

Orange and cardamom scones are a delicious and easy-to-make recipe that will impress your family and friends. These scones are perfect for any occasion and can be customized to suit your taste buds. So why not give this recipe a try and see how easy it is to make homemade scones?
